It hard to get excited about a new Epson inkjet printer because they bring out a new model what seems like every week, the latest being the Stylus SX400. It is a multifunction all-in-one inkjet printer, scanner and photo copier which offer the functionality of three machines in one neat compact unit. Epson multifunction printers of the past have always offered a lot in terms of performance and the have always been competitively priced but have lacked real value for money in terms of their running costs. The price of printer ink cartridges has gone up considerable across the board in recent months and it more important than ever for a printer to be economical it terms of it running costs as well as it purchase price. Epson SX400 ink cartridges are more economical in the long run than its competitors as each colour ink has its own cartridges so each can be changed independently, but the cost of the genuine Epson ink cartridges is still expensive at £30 a set. Fortunately there are compatible ink cartridges variable for the SX400 which cost half the price of the originals. The SX400 doesn’t disappoint in terms of its performance, printing quality is excellent for all types of documents from text to high resolution photos. The scanner has an impressive 1200dpi resolution which results in pin sharp results and the photo copier makes use of the same A4 flat bed and produces similarly impressive results. The SX400 weakness is its printing speed which gets nowhere near the claimed 34 pages per minute in the official documentation. The overall build quality of the SX400 is good and a big improvement over previous models although the noise operation is still present as with previous Epson printers.
